Prep Tips For Home Renovation

Prep Tips For Home Renovation

A home renovation is an exciting prospect as it often means improving quality of life, extra space for family and entertaining, and the chance to replace outdated or damaged furnishings. Yet, overlooking the process of the actual home improvement during the thrill of picking new carpet and paint colours is common.

Anyone who has lived through a
renovation will tell you about the headaches and mess. Follow our home reno tips to help make your project far less imposing and inconvenient. Some planning and preparation will go a long way to making your home renovation a success.

Pack Away as Many Belongings as Possible

As the project start date approaches, the first order of business is to pack away as many belongings as possible. With increased dust and debris from reno construction, your valuables will need protection, or you’ll have weeks of dusting on your hands.

Furthermore, leaving your treasures in place may expose them to the risk of damage with heavy equipment and power cords moving about.

Cover Your Furniture and Vents

Construction dust is not your friend. It permeates the air and settles on every surface, despite your contractor’s best efforts to remove dust particles from sanding and cutting. As a result, not only will your furniture become dusty, but it could also absorb unpleasant odours.

Unfortunately, your home’s ventilation system will suck or blow air from the renovation zone and disperse it throughout the house, making every room a dusty, smelly mess. To avoid endless weeks of cleaning, cover your vents with thick plastic and tape readily available at the hardware store.

Move Any Plants Outside

Your houseplants breathe through their leaves and won’t fare well when covered with construction dust. So if you don’t have another room with favourable sunlight available, place your plants outside for fresh air.

We recognize that not every season is plant-friendly. If the weather is too cold or volatile for your plant to survive outside, place them in the garage or arrange for a plant sitter to take care of them.

Mentally Prepare and Plan Your Living Arrangement

Home improvements
can be a test of patience. There are extra people in the house making noise, and contractors also come early and sometimes leave late. They need access to your electrical plugins, trailing several cords throughout your rooms. Tripping hazards, awkward tools, and equipment will litter your space and yard.

For some, it can feel like a madhouse. In addition, delays or unforeseen problems can extend your estimated project finish date, which makes living there even more difficult. In that case, it may be better to live with a relative or schedule a holiday away.

Prepare a Safe Space for Children and Pets

A renovation is somewhat chaotic, despite everyone’s best intentions. Yet, managing a reno project with pets and children takes it to a new level. You may have prepared for the mayhem, but they are not.

Both are unpredictable, curious, and anxious with all the noise and disruption to their routines. Plus, there will be dangerous equipment and chemicals around that could cause horrible injuries. Therefore, designate a safe zone away from construction with barriers to prevent accidental intrusions in the reno zone.
